Starter Tools

Introduction

Yes, it is possible to skimp on the tools and use household items such as kitchen scissors and cutting boards. Just keep in mind that performing any task without the proper tools requires more time and effort.

Every crafter needs the proper tools for their project. This article highlights the tools you will need to enjoy your crafting experience.

Cutting Mat

A cutting mat is a specialized mat designed to protect surfaces and provide a safe cutting area for various crafting and cutting activities. It is typically made of a multi-layered, durable material that helps to protect the underlying table or work surface from damage caused by cutting tools such as knives, rotary cutters, and craft blades.

Rotary Cutter

A rotary cutter is a tool generally used by quilters to cut fabric. It consists of a handle with a circular blade that rotates, thus the tool's name. Rotary cutter blades are very sharp, can be resharpened, and are available in different sizes: usually smaller blades are used to cut small curves, while larger blades are used to cut to straight lines and broad curves. Several layers of fabric can be cut simultaneously with a sharp (fresh) blade, making it easier to cut out patchwork pieces of the same shape and size than with scissors. Quilters use rotary cutters with specially designed templates and rulers made of approximately 3.2 mm (0.125 in) thick clear or color-tinted plastic.

Seam Roller

Not to be confused with a steam roller.

A seam roller is a tool used in sewing to smooth and flatten the edges of seams. It is made from a soft, rubber or plastic material that can be rolled over the edge of the fabric to create a neater finish. The pressing action of the seam roller is subtle enough to avoid damage to your latex while helping to create fast, flat seams.

Microfiber Cloths

Microfiber cloths are made from fibers finer than silk. They absorb oily matter without being abrasive or leaving a residue, meaning that your work area and your project can stay clean and tidy without risk of damage to the final product.
